Another Pastor Reality Show?
I must be honest, that was my first thought. From the "Preachers of..." Name Your City series on Bravo to Lifetime's "Preacher's Daughters" and "Preach" - all which are now cancelled, it's a wonder as to why TV producers continue to keep their cameras in the pulpit. Well, "The Book of John Gray" airing April 15th on OWN isn't Pastor John Gray's first stint on TV. The Lakewood Church Associate Pastor was cast on FOX's daytime talk series, "Preachers" seated with other notably recognized men of the cloth which failed to be picked up after a pilot test run last summer.
It seems the church does not like to have the spotlight. We are especially vocal to criticize and petition cancellations when that spotlight is on everything we try to hide and all the skeletons in the back closet of the church's basement start falling out. Church folk can be a little aggressive and are quick to sling that backlash. So again, why are we airing another pastor reality show?
Maybe Houston's progressive mega-church pastor has what it takes to reach both sides of the aisle, those in the church and not. I like Pastor John Gray. I enjoy his perspectives and I like his delivery when it comes to discussing taboo topics. Remember the controversial "Preachers" episode with comedian, Monique and open marriage? Watch his thoughts here. He doesn't sacrifice his beliefs for the comfort of others, but is still relational when sharing the gospel. I think people can take a lot of gems from his ministry. I'll be watching with an open mind and discerning spirit. Hopefully, this doesn't become just another pastor reality show.
