Falling from Faith
We call ourselves us “believers”. At the confession of our faith, the first think we’re asked is if we "believe”. Faith constructs the foundational blocks of our entire belief system in God. Without it, we literally have nothing to stand on. As integral as it is, why does faith seem to slip away from us so easily. We go through our daily routines, haphazardly on autopilot. Troubled mornings, restless nights counting the days to another week passed. Life is definitely moving, but for some reason it feels as though I am not. On December 31st, we made declarations for the new year, pretty decorated vision boards, subtweets and memes saying goodbye to our past only to meet a new season of the same defeat. It feels as though faith can’t give me two cents to rub together, let alone two blocks to stand on.
When down times hit, they HIT! We can’t be strong all the time, we must refuse to stay down the entire time. So, how do we get up from here?
1. Get Focused
During times of lull, it’s easy to be distracted by everything that is going wrong. But Get Focused! Soberly assess what is triggering depression and where you feel as though you’re failing. This brings a strategy of self-awareness. When doubt creeps in, silence it with the language of who God is and who God says you are.
2. Fight Up
Could it be our routine time with God has become just that, a routine? Quick prayers here and there to hold us until the next church service is not enough to fill and fuel us. We’re literally running on empty. Switch up the worship. Increase the one-on-one time. Turn the phone off and the plate down! Don’t just complain to God, but put a demand on God to meet you where you are. Be intentional and consistent on seeking God’s presence.
3. Preparation
Disappointment induces complacency. Does any of these sound familiar? “My work is in vain.” “What I want, I probably won’t get.” “I don’t care and it doesn’t matter anymore.” “Do I even deserve what it is I desire?” Don’t get stuck and give up! The trick of the enemy is to get us to put our weapons down and feel like the fight isn’t worth fighting anymore. But it is! Your promise is birthed out of preparation. And preparation will always meet purpose!
4. Potential vs. Purpose
Do you ever feel like a hamster running aimlessly on the wheel on life? It could be you’ve been caught up in the chase of potential instead of purpose. They look sooo similar. Potential quantifies everything you can do and what society says you should accomplish. Purpose qualifies who you are to become. Potential is a checklist of “to do’s”. Purpose is who you are.
